Welcome to our traditional Orkney Chairs online showroom!

Oak Hood, Driftwood Hood, Driftwood Orkney Chairs  Walnut Hooded Orkney Chair

The Orkney Chair is a handcrafted chair made of straw and wood.  As the name suggests it is a tradition unique to the Orkney Islands which lie to the north of Scotland.  The tradition of making these chairs is carried on today by only a few master craftsmen of whom Jackie Miller is one, along with his family and family friend, Michael.

Each Orkney Chair is an elegant piece of craftmanship which takes 2-3 weeks of work by hand: one week for the wooden base and another week for the strawback of the chair.  The truly original Hooded Orkney Chair takes three weeks of work by hand, one week for the wooden base and two weeks to stitch the strawback.

Queen Mother and Hooded Orkney Chair

The Orkney Chair was a particular favourite of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and is today still the present of choice in Orkney for special occasions, particularly a wedding or wedding anniversary present, birthday or Christmas present, retirement present or simply a beautiful gift to a loved one.

At Scapa Crafts, it's quality that's our trademade, a Scapa Crafts Orkney Chair is not just for a special occasion, it's an heirloom.
